Lyon, France is a hidden gem located in the southeast region of the country. Lyon is known for its history and beautiful architectural landmarks. It is a small city with a lot of charm. I would definitely suggest checking it out because it has a lot of character.
Full of History and Architecture
Honestly, I would just suggest bringing comfortable walking shoes and being prepared to walk everywhere. The city is definitely a walkable city and it honestly gives you a lot more beautiful landmarks than taking public transportation. Although, public transportation is definitely a thing and quite easy. It costs about 2 euros for one ride or 17 euros for 10.
This is the most upbeat part of town where you can find many bars, restaurants, shopping, or cafes. It is full of beautiful architecture as it was built in the 18th century. Lyons Opera house and City hall are all located here as well. It is definitely a place to get lost in all that you can do and see.
Although some seating has been lost, it is still a sight to see. It was an outdoor theatre that held up to 10,000 people. It was built on the hill of Fourvière and if you are a history lover, this is definitely for you. The theatre is now part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
This was probably one of my favorite parts of Lyon. The murals are located all over the city. The stunning artwork is encaptivating and truly a view to see. It is definitely another reason to walk around Lyon because you never know what mural you will end up stumbling upon.
The fountain is a beautiful landmark in the city that represents the city’s creativity. It honors four beautiful artists: Philibert de l’Orme (1510-1570 architect), Gérard Audran (1640-1703 engraver), Guillaume Coustou (1677 – 1746 sculptor) and Hippolyte Flandrin (1809-1864 painter). It is located in the middle of a beautiful plaza as well.
Place Antonin-Poncet is a beautiful square located in the Bellecour quarter of the arrondissement. The square has many greenery, benches, and fountains. It is a place to go to relax or even to have a picnic. This was probably another one of my favorite parts of Lyon.
Although a fancy word, it is honestly just a bridge. It is a footbridge for only walking and has some incredible views of the building and river around it. Highly suggest adding this into your route around Lyon.
This church is located on the hilltops of Lyon. It will not only give you a beautiful taste of 18th century architecture but also incredible views of the city below. Although the hike up to the church is steep and consists of many small steps, it is worth it. If you are definitely not up for the climb, you can also take public transportation here.
