I love Cinque Terre. Besides Florence being my favorite city, cinque Terre is my favorite town. I honestly believe it is more beautiful than the Amalfi Coast. The reason I say this is because the towns are so beautiful with their colorful houses dressed upon cliffs. The architecture and landscape is unlike anything I had ever seen. When I say towns I mean it, Cinque Terre is comprised of 5 different towns with beautiful cliffs right against the ocean. Their specialty here is seafood and pesto pasta.
I was living in Florence at the time but only decided to do a day tour of it. I will be back though and for a few nights. I did a group tour guide from Florence to Cinque Terre. We left on a bus in the morning, went to Cinque, and back to Florence at night. It was very reasonably priced and was a good excursion. There are many different day trips that you can choose from Florence to Cinque Terre, here are some amazing options.
How to Do Your Own Day Trip
You can also take the train to Cinque Terre. You will depart from the Santa Maria Novella station in Florence and you will have to connect in Pisa. Maybe stop in Pisa for a second to check out the leaning tower?! But if not, you will change trains and continue onto Cinque Terre. Google is your friend and will give you all the train times, this route takes about 2 hours and 30 mins. This route will cost anywhere from 20-30 euros. Or if you hate following directions or don’t want to go alone, the Get Your Guide tour company has an incredible guided day trip to Cinque Terre as seen below.
There are three ways to see all the towns, you can either go on foot, by train, or by boat. The trains do run regularly throughout the day and are one I suggest if you are doing a day trip. If you aren’t, I would suggest alternative ways to check out the different towns. If I go back and stay for a few days I will be walking/hiking and boating a lot more, a girl can dream though.
This town was so cute and I was able to relax and enjoy the ocean views while enjoying a chocolate croissant. Riomaggiore is one of the towns that are on the bigger side, actually being the largest of the five. It will be your first stop when entering the Cinque Terre area. If you want to stay in a hotel, this town is one of the two that have hotel options. You will find some of the most pleasing sunsets and picturesque photographs here.
To get to this town from Riomaggiore you can hike to get amazing views of the ocean and the shoreline cliffs at the Punta Bonfiglio viewpoint. This was my favorite town due to the infamous picturesque landscape. If I come back to stay in Cinque Terre, I will stay in this town. It is a town known for its sweet Sciacchetrà wine and is the oldest village of the five.
You can continue your walking journey to this town but if you only have a day in CInque, I suggest taking the train. This town is the highest in altitude and if you still decide to walk or even from the train you will have to climb a big set of stairs down from it, the Lardarina. Don’t forget, Italy is very hot during the summertime so bring water if this is your plan! This town is of the quietest which brings its special treat to it. It is the only town that has a viewpoint where you can see all five towns. This town is a gem.
This town is a huge tourist stop and is considered to be gorgeous out of all the towns. I did enjoy but something about Riomaggiore sparked more of my interest. With that being said, Vernazza’s harbor is the landing point of the Cinque Terre Coast. It is lined with cafes, narrow streets, and cobble grounds. It is beautiful in a town.
This town is one of the largest and a great way to spend most of your day. It holds many different stay options whether it be hotels or Airbnbs. Monterosso is the only town that has a proper beach where you can lay out and soak up the sun, which is exactly what I did. The water is very cold but also very refreshing! I also would suggest saving your appetite for this town, they have many beachside options for places to eat at. The town is split into two with its older and newer parts. What a perfect way to end your five-town tour.
Do not go to Italy and miss these beautiful towns. That is all.
