The Book of Hygge: A Must Read Before Visiting Denmark
Year after year the Danes are considered to be the happiest people on the earth. They are usually top tier on the World’s Happiness report. You would think it must be because they have good weather or no traffic (lol). But actually, Denmark winters are some of the coldest and the light of the day is usually short and brief. The author of the Book of Hygge, Meik Wiking, is the Ceo of the Happiness Research Institute. He has spent years studying why Danes are continuously the happiest people in the world and what it truly means to be hygge.
So what makes the Danes so happy? Hygge
Hygge is a word that describes a mood of comfort, relaxation, wellness. You can’t necessarily describe hygge because it is more of a feeling. It is an atmosphere that can be and is created. This feeling, this atmosphere, this ambiance, is what makes them some of the happiest people in the world. And they create this feeling in everyday life.
Hygge; Hyggelig
Hygge is most prominent in the winter months and specifically during Christmas time. Don’t let this cold and crazy winter keep you from having hygge. But hygge is never limited to the winter months because it is a feeling that can be created anywhere.
Hygee is spending time with family, cozying up by the fire in comfortable warm clothes, cuddling up with a good book, a picnic in the park, a game night with friends, a meal cooked together, an ambiance of candles and subtle lighting, making homemade drinks or cocktails. What hygge is not?- going to a club with flashing lights, spending hours scrolling on social media, eating fast food, going on a shopping spree at the mall.

I personally just loved this book because it inspired me to be a happier gal. A little bit about me, I work every day with personal growth and growing my mindset. This book gave me very inspiring ways to grow my happiness and showed me how the Danes are some of the happiest people in the world. Unfortunately, I never read this until after I visited Copenhagen, but I definitely suggest before you go read this book. It has given me so much excitement in learning more about their culture and now I can’t wait to go back.
