The Ultimate Weekend Guide to Newport, Rhode Island

Newport, Rhode Island is the perfect place for a summer weekend getaway. The charming coastline is full of boats and beautiful views. This blog will give you a local’s take on Newport, Rhode Island. I have outlined Newport’s guide with three main categories, what to do, what to eat, and where to stay to give you the ultimate insider trip. This cute costal town is a bigger version of Connecticut’s town of Mystic. Both are great but I personally find there’s a lot more to do in Newport. This is the The Ultimate Weekend Guide to Newport!

What to Do In Newport, Rhode Island

Hike the Cliff Walk

Newport’s stunning cliff walk is 3.5 miles of the most incredible ocean views. During your hike, you will also walk by the Gilded Age Mansions. Part of the walk will become rocky so good sneakers are a must. You don’t have to do the entire 3.5 miles to still get amazing panoramic sea views and architectural wonders.

Tour the Extravagant Mansions

The Preservation Society of Newport County was formed to protect the lands and architecture of Newport. Located at the end of Bellevue Ave, there are 11 Gilded Mansions you can tour. The mansions were built in the Gilded Age, which dated back between the late 1800s and early 1900s. They were home to America’s wealthiest families, including the Vanderbilts and Morgans. The Breakers house is the most famous and iconic home in Newport, but local favorites include the Elm House and the Marble House.

International Tennis Hall of Fame

Also located on Bellevue Ave but closer to downtown Newport is the International Tennis Hall of Fame. The International Tennis Hall of Fame not only promotes tennis but also preserves it. It was the birthplace of American Tennis Tournaments in 1881. You can either go here during a match or just visit the museum and 7-acre grounds for only $18.

Thames Street

Thames Street is in the very center of Newport Rhode Island and is lined with trendy shops, restaurants, and bars. It is the primary street in Newport and is an iconic staple of the city.

Take a Scenic Ride Through Ocean Drive Historic District

This activity does require a car or a moped but it definitely is worth it. Ocean Drive stretches 10 miles long but is the best way to see the ocean views. We rented a scooter like the one featured below from Scooter World. The southern coastline of Aquidneck Island is where Ocean Drive is located. Aquidneck Island is the perfect place for picnics while taking in the wonderful views of the Atlantic Ocean. Some great spots to check out along the way are King Park, Ida Lewis Yacht Club, Hammersmith Farm, US Coast Guard Station, Castle Hill Inn and Resort, Brenton Point State Park, and Gooseberry beach.

Have a Beach Day at Easton’s Beach

Easton’s beach is the largest beach in Newport and is located at the start of Newport’s cliff walk. It is a 3/4 mile beach that is home to many surfers catching a wave. This beach is the perfect place to relax while enjoying the sun’s rays. You should also check out Easton’s Beach Snack Bar for a quick bite to eat.

Go On a Sailing Excursion

Newport, Rhode Island offers sailing experiences all over the island. The best way to see this beautiful destination is definitely by sea. A sightseeing tour on Newport’s finest sails is nothing but a beautiful experience.
