13 Fun Activities in Barcelona and Things to Do
I have only great things to say about Barcelona. There are so many fun activities and things to do in Barcelona! A few years prior, I was able to visit some friends when they were studying abroad. I truly believe it gave me a better feel of what its like to be a local. Since then I have made my way back to Barcelona a few times including being on layovers as a flight attendant. Whether you are just passing through or on an extended vacation, you won’t ever be bored! The city is lively and full of energy. Today I am sharing with you some of the most popular destinations in Barcelona but also some of my personal hidden gems!
The best time to visit Barcelona is during the off-season. I have been during the summer (peak season) months, which are hot and overcrowded. When I went in November it wasn’t full of tourism but the weather was quite chilly. Other months that are considered off-season include April, May, September, and October.

Sagrada Familia
Park Güell
Another place I was able to see, and something you need to put on your list, is Parc Guell. It is a unique community with amazing buildings once again created by Gaudi. It was intended to be a trendy housing community but the funding was cut. Now it is a really beautiful park with an amazing view of the city. It is also a part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. If you have the opportunity to visit here during sunset, I highly suggest it. We decided to take a short taxi ride but you can also take a bus and the metro to get there. The cost to get into Parc Guell is 10 euros and in my opinion is a must-see.
La Boqueria
If you’ve read more of my travels then you know how much I love outdoor markets. La Boqueria on Las Ramblas is an amazing outdoor market. Mercado De La Boqueria has a lot of amazing restaurants and places to shop for the best meats and fish. In this market, was where I was able to experience the best donuts I have ever had. If you are a donut lover like myself, Chok the Chocolate Kitchen is a must, I still have dreams about it. Find yourself a donut or enjoy tapas at a restaurant, this place won’t disappoint!
Parc De La Citudella
We also ventured over to the Arc de Triumph and the surrounding park. The park is called Parc De La Citudella and it is at the Arc De Triomf metro stop. The Barcelona Zoo is also located in this park if that interests you. As much as it was a beautiful tourist destination, it definitely doesn’t need to be squeezed into your trip if you can’t fit it. I personally feel like if you’ve seen the one in Paris then you are all set! But since we had the time, it was a great tourist stop for us to enjoy. If you have the time, it is a fun thing to do too.
Go to a Football game
To all my football fans, you have to go to a live game in Barcelona. The FC Barcelona games are located at Camp Nou stadium. It was such a fun time and a fun experience. Especially because when I went Messi was still on the team. An incredible experience to enjoy solo, with friends, or with whoever you are traveling with.
Have Paella at Xiringuito Escribà
Located on the waterfront of Bogatell Beach is the restaurant Xiringuito Escribà. Here you will find, what is rumored to be, the best paella in town. They also serve the Catalan version of paella. Not only is the food amazing, but you will also receive waterfront views.
Watch Live Music at Palau de la Música Catalana
Montjuic Castle
Montjuic Castle is an old military fortress that dates back almost 500 years. It was built on top of a hill in Barcelona. This is one of my favorite spots because it gives beautiful views of the city.
Casa Batllo
Go to an Art Museum
If you love the creativity of Casa Batllo, another option is going to an art museum. There is one that is quite popular with locals and those who are visiting. The Picasso Museum, also known as Museu Picasso, is a must-visit. It showcases 4,251 pieces of Spanish artwork by the famous Pablo Picasso. To plan your visit please refer to this website.
Have a Drink at Restaurant El Cercle
Restaurant El Cercle is located at the Royal Artistic Circle of Barcelona museum, aka Real Círculo Artístico. The restaurant has outdoor seating that overlooks the beautiful street below. The cuisine is Catalan cuisine with Japanese dishes. We didn’t eat here but enjoyed their incredible sangria! We were able to drink wine, enjoy the view, and people-watch!
Take a Day Trip to Montserrat
For those who love the outdoors, Montserrat allows you to escape the city. Located about an hour away, it will showcase the best views of the Catalunya mountains. There is a museum, a chapel, and a stairway to heaven! You can ride by train or cable card and many tourist spots can sell you tickets that include entrance into Montserrat.
