A Weekend Guide to Discovering Madrid’s Culture and Cuisine

In the bustling epicenter of Madrid, Hotel Montera Madrid stands as a beacon of luxury. This prestigious member of the Curio Collection by Hilton offers guests exceptional service, elegantly appointed rooms, and a strategic location for exploring Madrid’s endless wonders. A haven of sophistication and comfort, it’s the quintessential choice for discerning travelers looking to immerse themselves in Madrid’s vibrant lifestyle. There are plenty of other hotels or even Airbnb’s to stay in but I suggest staying here. From the exotically beautiful interior to its location within walking distance to many spots on this guide, it is worth every penny. Plus, for such a luxurious hotel, it wasn’t anything super expensive. It is considered a mid-range hotel as far as price point.Β

Getting Around: Madrid’s Train Network and Tourist Travel Pass

Madrid boasts a comprehensive train network, making city exploration both convenient and eco-friendly. To navigate with ease, purchase a Madrid Tourist Travel Pass, available at major metro stations, including the airport and Atocha train station. This pass offers unlimited travel on buses and trains, ensuring a seamless experience as you discover Madrid’s architectural marvels, lively squares, and lush parks. Especially if you decide to stay at Hotel Montera, you might not need this metro. The only time we used the metro was getting to and from the airport and going to the park (as featured below on Sunday). Most of the destinations we experienced were definitely within walking distance of the main city center.Β

Friday: A Short Day of Discovery and Elegance

Calle de Preciados

After checking into the hotel, I would suggest heading over to Preciados Street which is a short walk from Hotel Montera. This bustling shopping street is a paradise for those looking to indulge in retail therapy. With a mix of international brands and local boutiques, it’s a vibrant hub for fashion enthusiasts and souvenir hunters alike.

Rooftop Bar at Hotel Montera

Unwind with sophisticated rooftop drinks while admiring Madrid’s skyline. This chic bar offers a unique vantage point to soak in the city’s energy, making it a favorite for both locals and visitors. Plus it is located at the top of your hotel and is easily accessible for those staying at the hotel. (During sunset you can expect and line out the hotel doors to get a seat on the rooftop).

Dinner at Restaurante Casa Benigna

Experience the epitome of Mediterranean dining in this acclaimed establishment. With a focus on seasonal ingredients and creative presentations, it’s a culinary journey through Spain’s diverse flavors. Not to mention, it has a Google ranking of 4.6 stars! After dinner, you could go to El Sol for many live music bars or even head to Kapital, an iconic nightclub. Or if you are anything like me, you will be so exhausted from the travel into Madrid that you will want to get a good night’s sleep!

Saturday: A Blend of Culture and Culinary Excellence

Puerta del Sol

A vital center of Madrid’s social life, this square buzzes with activity. Its historical significance and lively atmosphere make it a key spot for understanding Madrid’s pulse. Even in the off-season, you can expect this square to be filled with tourists and locals alike. It is a fun place to walk around, as there are many beautiful buildings and plenty of shopping!

Lunch at El Minibar

A gastronomic treasure, this intimate eatery serves traditional tapas with a contemporary twist. It’s a culinary hotspot for those seeking authentic Spanish flavors in a modern setting. It is one of the top-rated tapas bars in the city and for good reason. I would suggest getting the Crispy Boar Rolls the Wrinkled Boiled Potatoes or both!

Head to La Lantina

Stroll through this historic neighborhood, famous for its bohemian vibe and tapas bars. It encapsulates Madrid’s rich history and contemporary zest. Bring your camera for this spot because the architecture here is beautiful!Β

Plaza Mayor

A short walk from La Lantina is the Plaza Mayor. An iconic square, offering a picturesque backdrop for outdoor wine enjoyment. Its historical facades and vibrant street performers create a lively ambiance. I would suggest going to one of the restaurants here. You can sit outside and order a bottle of wine and get the best people-watching views! I would not order any food at these restaurants because it is such a tourist tap. Just stick with drinking and enjoying the beautiful views.Β

Shopping at Calle Gran Via

After a day’s worth of adventure I would suggest heading back to your hotel and freshening up. When you are ready for the night ahead, shopping at Calle Gran Via is a great way to start the night. Known as Madrid’s shopping mecca, this street boasts a wide array of shops against a backdrop of stunning architecture, perfect for fashion aficionados.

Located at the Hotel Riu on Calle Gran Via, this rooftop bar is the most iconic in Madrid. Secure a spot at this exclusive rooftop bar for breathtaking sunset views. It’s an ideal setting for romantic evenings or special occasions. It will be super busy so getting an express pass in will be worth it. Especially during sunset this place gets crowded so put your name on the waitlist immediately when you get up to the rooftop because that will ensure you get a table which will ensure you can order a drink. Besides that, the views of the sunset are immaculate.Β

Desde 1911

A seafood lover’s haven, offering the freshest catches in a refined setting. Its reputation for quality and innovation ensures a memorable dining experience. It has 4.8 stars on Google reviews! Desde will be a bit out of the way so getting an Uber or using the train is ideal.Β

1862 Dry Bar

Dive into Madrid’s vibrant nightlife at this hidden gem, where expert mixologists craft innovative cocktails in an atmospheric setting. Located in the El Sol neighborhood, it ends up being only a 10-minute walk to your hotel.Β

Sunday: Leisurely Pursuits and Historical Marvels

Mercado de San Miguel

Explore this culinary haven where gourmet treats meet traditional Spanish cuisine. It’s a bustling marketplace that captivates foodies and culture enthusiasts alike. Also walking distance from the hotel is a perfect way to start the day as there are many eateries and snacks to choose from!

Parque de El Retiro

Madrid’s premier park offers a peaceful retreat with its scenic walkways, ornate sculptures, and tranquil lake. It’s a sanctuary amidst the city’s hustle and bustle. This park is a train ride away from Madrid’s city center so if you don’t have time this is something to skip. However, it was so relaxing and beautiful to have a nature refresh in such a big concrete city.

San GinΓ©s Churro Bar

Indulge in Madrid’s famous churros and thick chocolate at this historic cafΓ©. A staple of Madrid’s culinary scene, it’s a delightful experience for sweet tooths. Probably one of my favorite spots because it still has its 1894 charm from when it first opened. With its location right in the bustling Puerto Del Sol, you can expect it to have a line out the door. Don’t get discouraged, the line moves quickly. The churros here are very different from than ones that I have had in Mexico but they still are delicious. Plus, dipping the churros in the melted chocolate is quite the combo! You will order your churros and pay for them at the counter after waiting in line. Then you will wait in another line for a table.Β

The restaurant has outdoor seating and two floors so trust me when I say the tables turn over quickly! Also don’t forget to watch the waiters delivering the churros and chocolate as it is quite a skill!
