Typical costs of Traveling to Morocco
Traveling to Morocco, a mesmerizing treasure in North Africa, offers a plethora of options catering to diverse budgets for visitors.
1. Transporation
Transportation in Morocco is generally affordable and convenient, but it’s important to be aware of a few key tips to avoid overcharging. Taxis are readily available and can be a great way to get around, but it’s crucial to determine the price before your journey begins. Many taxi drivers may try to overcharge tourists, so agreeing on a fare ahead of time is essential to ensure you’re paying a fair price. Alternatively, using a taxi with a meter, known as a “petit taxi” in cities, can also help avoid misunderstandings. Additionally, other transportation options like buses and trains are cost-effective and reliable for longer distances. Overall, with a bit of preparation, navigating Morocco can be both easy and budget-friendly.
2. Accommodation
Accommodations in Morocco cater to a wide range of budgets, offering something for everyone. If you’re traveling on a budget, you can find dorm beds in hostels starting as low as $7 per night, particularly in cities like Marrakech. For mid-range options, comfortable hotels typically cost between $40 and $80 per night, providing amenities such as WiFi, pools, and rooftop dining. Luxury travelers can enjoy high-end riads and resorts, with prices reaching up to $300 per night or more, depending on the level of luxury and location.
3. Food
Food in Morocco is not only delicious but also quite affordable, catering to various budgets. If you’re looking to experience local flavors without spending much, street food and fast food options are incredibly cheap, typically costing between $2 to $5 per meal. These can include tasty bites like sandwiches, kebabs, and Moroccan pastries. For those who prefer dining in casual or local restaurants, you can expect to spend around $5 to $10 per meal. Mid-range restaurants, offering more variety and ambiance, usually charge between $10 to $20 per meal. If you’re in the mood for a high-end dining experience, luxury restaurants start at $20 and can go significantly higher depending on the cuisine and setting
Currency: The official currency of Morocco is the Moroccan Dirham (MAD). As of the latest update, 1 USD is equivalent to approximately 10.2 MAD, but this exchange rate is subject to fluctuation, so it’s important to check the most current rate as your travel date approaches.
Credit Cards & ATMs: In Morocco, many shops, restaurants, and hotels, especially in tourist-centric areas like Marrakech, Fes, and Casablanca, readily accept credit card payments. However, from my experience, it is wise to carry cash, as smaller establishments, local markets, and more secluded locations often prefer or only accept cash. Additionally, euros are widely accepted, making it convenient for travelers from Europe. This blend of payment options ensures convenience while exploring Morocco’s diverse attractions and cultural offerings. Always check for the most current exchange rates before your travel date to ensure accurate conversions.
Money Saving Tips
Haggle in Markets and Souks: Bargaining is a common practice in Morocco, especially in local markets and souks. Sellers often set higher initial prices expecting customers to negotiate. Don’t hesitate to haggle to get a better deal on souvenirs, clothing, and other goods.
Eat at a Local restaurant: Moroccan street food and local restaurants offer delicious meals at a fraction of the cost of dining in tourist-centric establishments. You can enjoy local specialties like tagines, couscous, and pastries for just a few dollars.
Use Public Transportation: Public transportation in Morocco is affordable and efficient. Trains and buses connect major cities and are much cheaper than taxis or private car hires.
What Can You Expect from Marrakech?
Marrakech quickly became one of my favorite cities, despite my initial reservations. I found myself enchanted by the vibrant souks, where I could spend hours exploring the myriad of handmade items. The city’s architecture and design were equally captivating, showcasing a unique blend of history and artistry.
