A Perfect Day in the Stonington Borough: A Local Guide

Just five minutes from Mystic, Stonington Borough is a hidden gem that many visitors overlook especially with Mystic being the major attraction. But I am here to tell you while Mystic draws the crowds, Stonington offers something a little different: historic homes, quiet harbor views, charming boutiques, and some of the prettiest waterfront walks in Connecticut.

If you’re looking for a slower-paced coastal New England day, here’s exactly how I’d spend it.

Start Your Morning with Coffee and a Walk Along Water Street

One of the best things about Stonington Borough is that it’s incredibly walkable. Park your car once and spend the day exploring on foot, it is so charming!

Begin your morning on Water Street, the Borough’s main street. You will find historic homes, independent boutiques, art galleries, and locally owned businesses. You will absolutely love a leisurely stroll here, so much to see and take in. What makes it different from nearby Mystic is how quiet, slower, and wonderfully relaxed it is.

If you need coffee for your morning start, enjoy it at Indulge Coffee & Sandwich Co. or Macondo, two popular Stonington Borough coffee shops.

Browse the Shops and Galleries

One of my favorite parts of visiting Stonington is discovering the independent shops tucked along Water Street.

You’ll find everything from antiques and home décor to artwork and unique gifts. The shopping scene feels curated rather than commercial, which makes coastal Connecticut so special. You’ll easily stumble upon something special you weren’t planning to buy.

If you enjoy coastal-inspired interiors, local art, or vintage finds, this is the place to browse.

Lunch At Noah’s

For lunch, head to Noah’s.

Located right on Water Street, it’s a longtime local favorite and an easy stop while exploring the Borough. The restaurant focuses on fresh ingredients and has become one of the area’s most popular gathering spots.

If the weather is nice, grab a table outside and enjoy watching life in the Borough go by.

Walk To the Lighthouse

After lunch, continue south toward the water and visit the historic Stonington Lighthouse Museum.

Built in 1840, the lighthouse sits at the edge of the Borough overlooking Fisher’s Island Sound. It’s one of Connecticut’s most picturesque coastal landmarks and offers a glimpse into the area’s maritime history.

Even if you don’t go inside, the views from the surrounding grounds are worth the walk.

Spend the Afternoon at duBois Beach

From the lighthouse, continue to nearby duBois Beach.

This small beach sits at the southern tip of the Borough and unlike other Connecticut beaches, it is intimate and peaceful.

Bring a book and dip your feet in the water, it’s a true gem.

Before dinner, enjoy one the harbor walk near Stonington Commons. It has lovely views of sailboats, docks, and the harbor. It’s a short walk but one of the most scenic spots in town, especially as the afternoon light begins to soften.

End the Day with Dinner by the Water

For dinner, consider either:

  • Water Street Cafe for a cozy Borough dining experience.
  • Breakwater for waterfront views overlooking the harbor.

As the sun begins to set, you can head back toward the point and watch the beautiful colors that light up the sky.

Why I love the Stonington Borough

What makes Stonington special is the atmosphere.

You can spend the morning wandering through boutiques, the afternoon watching boats drift by, and the evening enjoying dinner with a waterfront view.

If Mystic feels a little busy, Stonington Borough definitely has the perfect coastal Connecticut escape just down the road.

And after one visit, don’t be surprised if it becomes your favorite shoreline town in Connecticut.
