How to Spend a Relaxing and Wellness Weekend in Sonoma County, California

Sonoma County will always have a special place in my heart as it was my mom and I’s first yoga retreat location and our first one together.  The pacific ocean that lines Northern California creates a mix of adventuring, relaxing, and a whole lot of wine. There is nothing more relaxing than a glass of wine… just kidding! It is, however, important to note that Sonoma is known for being one of the best wine countries in the United States.

How to Get to Sonoma

Sonoma Valley in Northern California is quite easy to get to if you have a car. Your best bet is to fly to San Francisco International Airport (SFO). Renting a car from SFO and heading straight to Sonoma or you can even stay the night in San Francisco as we did. We spent one night in San Francisco and one day exploring the city before embarking on a wellness journey 90 minutes north in Sonoma. If you are exploring a day in San Francisco, check out my blog post on how to spend the PERFECT day in beautiful SF.

What to Bring to Sonoma

First thing, you cannot forget sunscreen. The sun will be shining no matter the time of year. You also want to bring a refillable water bottle because not only is it great for the environment but also because Northern California is super dry. Don’t forget comfy clothes especially if you are embarking on a yoga retreat or wellness escape. I would also definitely suggest a yoga mat, there will be plenty of places that are perfect for yoga, even if you aren’t on a yoga retreat.

Ok, this destination is the perfect spot for yoga retreats which is why to stay here you do have to sign up for a yoga retreat first. However, this is where we did our yoga retreat and I would highly suggest it. One of the most surreal and relaxing overnight stays. They provide mind, body, and soul connection while hosting the perfect spot for enjoying Sonoma’s nature. If you are looking for a yoga retreat here there are many references you can turn to but your best bet is googling as depending on when you’re reading this will depend on what is available. The Lodge at Bodega Bay

The Lodge at Bodega Bay is one of Sonoma County’s top-rated hotels and for good reason. The rooms at The Lodge are very spacious, some with incredible views of the pacific ocean. Their spa is well renowned for treatments including messages, facials, and body treatments. They also have a pool, bird walks, a fitness center, and bocce ball courts with views of the pacific coast.

Sonoma Coast Villa and Spa

Another incredible hotel, Sonoma Coast Villa and Spa, is also located in Bodega Bay but at a more affordable price. The hotel has spa options, winery tours, and horseback riding availability. Their villas are European-inspired as they rest on the beautiful Pacific Coast.

AutoCamp Russian river

AutoCamp has many locations over the USA but one is right on the Russian River in Sonoma. It is a beautiful destination and an incredible opportunity to connect with nature. Enjoy the Abundant and Expansive Wineries

California wine country including Napa Valley and Sonoma Valley is a must-experience activity. Sonoma County is definitely known for its grape growing but dry creek valley is the most compact with over 70 wineries. Dry Creek Valley is located just outside of the town of Healdsburg. You will find the best wineries here in abundance including Ferrari-Carano, Mill Creek Vineyards, and Ridge Lytton Springs. Enjoy a glass of your new favorite sauvignon blanc or pinot noir. Another great winery that I would definitely suggest is the Imagery Estate Winery which also includes an art gallery.

Experience the Natural Salt Water for Healing

Nothing heals our bodies better than the ocean. Northern California has some of the most stunning coastal views. Take a drive down Bodega Bay on the iconic highway 1. If you go during sunset it will not disappoint! Other great locations on the coast include the two best beach spots North Salmon Creek Beach and South Salmon Creek Beach. For more coastal activities, check here.

Retail Therapy in Guerneville

Guerneville is a little town along the Russian River. It has all the charm of a small town with the cutest stores and architecture. It is definitely a must if retail therapy is relaxing to you. Other great shopping spots in Sonoma include Petaluma Premium Outlets, Santa Rosa Plaza Shopping Mall, and more high-end boutiques in Healdsburg.

Go to a Lavender Field

If you are traveling during June to Sonoma this is the best time to experience the gorgeous and captivating lavender fields. There are many destinations that have lavender fields including some wineries too. My favorite destination is the Lavender Bee Farm as it includes three varieties of lavender. Other great locations include Bees N Blooms, Monte-Bellaria di California, and Matanzas Creek Winery.

Osmosis Day Spa

Osmosis Day Spa is the perfect day spa getaway from wherever you are staying. It is one you don’t want to miss because Osmosis Day spa has a treatment called the Cedar Enzyme Bath which is a technique straight from Japan.
