This iconic backdrop is something you can’t miss when traveling to southern Italy. Staying in Amalfi can get a little pricy but it can definitely be enjoyed as a day trip if your budget doesn’t suffice. I did a day trip and had an amazing day. Except for next time, I will be enjoying a full few days there to really get the full charming experience. Not to mention, the entire town is picture-perfect.
If you are doing just a day trip, I would suggest at least in staying in one of the neighboring cities like Positano or Sorrento. We started in Naples, drove to Amalfi, and then laid our heads in Sorrento. You can also find many tours or trains that can take you to and from Naples in one day. When we drive we found parking on top of the mountain. The drive to Amalfi was quite nerve-racking as we were driving through windy roads on the side of a cliff.
Whether you are going to Amalfi, Sorrento, Positano, or anywhere along the Amalfi Coast, the best time to travel will be between May and October. The sun will be beaming and it is perfect swimming weather. The middle of the summer (July and August) does get extremely hot. Plus those months also are going to be swarming with tourists. I am not telling you what to do but I am telling you to avoid those months and stick to either May, September, or October.
I actually really enjoyed this way the best because we got to make our own schedule. Plus we got to see such incredible views along our drive. It can definitely get sketchy as the roads are small, windy, and right on the side of a cliff. Nonetheless, it was beautiful to see.
We got to the beach and immediately had lunch at a beachside restaurant. I got an amazing tuna fish salad. It’s not the type of salad that you think of in America. It’s the kind that is a salad with a can of tuna fish on top. Something about the tuna fish in Italy is that it is so amazing. I could eat the tuna by itself all day. The food was a bit pricy but was fine to just have lunch out. Amazing restaurants with beautiful views include Hotel Belair Sorrento, Maestros, Ristorante Don Giovanni, Arienzo Beach Club, Voce ‘E Nottre.
The most iconic beach in the Amalfi coast is the Mariana Grande which is where we went. There are also some other beautiful beaches including Atrani’s Beach and Furore Beach.
Sometimes the views from the ocean are just that much better. I would highly suggest fitting this activity into your budget. You can find a rental place just on the beach. It was so memorable and definitely worth it. There was a section in the water that did get a bit rough but besides that, I would say it was an easy to moderate paddle boarding terrain.
If I go back, I will absolutely be doing this free and beautiful activity. It will be one of the best places to find absolutely stunning views of the entire coastline. The hike also brings you through ancient ruins and towns. The hike is located in Bonberano which is easily located by bus from Sorrento or Positano.
This was my favorite thing I did when visiting the coast. The island is the most charming place ever. There are many things to do and see in Capri so stay tuned for a blog going over all of that.
