Set a Budget

When it comes to budgeting for your summer trips, starting with early planning and booking can make a world of difference, allowing you to snatch up early deals and use price alerts to catch dips in flight and accommodation costs. A detailed budget is paramount, categorizing expected expenses from transportation to emergencies, and employing budgeting apps can help keep your finances in check. Daily expenses can be managed by setting spending limits and opting for local markets for meals, enhancing both your budget and cultural experience. Incorporate free or low-cost activities, like visiting natural parks or museums with free admission days, to enrich your vacation without hefty price tags.

To fund your adventures, consider automated savings to a dedicated travel account and cutting back on non-essential spending. For those savvy with rewards, leveraging credit cards, like the Chase Sapphire Preferred, for bookings can earn points or cashback, further stretching your travel dollar. Expanding on these areas, especially destinations and travel insurance, will provide a comprehensive guide for readers looking to enjoy a memorable summer vacation without breaking the bank.

Choose Your Destinations Wisely

Summer travel consists of over-sold flights and over-crowded popular cities. If the tourist traps aren’t for you, considering off-the-beaten-path destinations or traveling during the shoulder season to avoid crowds and enjoy lower prices. Please refer to my blog post on the 6 hidden European gems for more information. When choosing a destination I encourage you to think about what you want from the vacation (relaxation, adventure, cultural experiences) to choose the right destination. If you want a relaxing, tranquil vacation you won’t want to go to Rome. If you don’t want to be smothered in heat, Marrakech or Phoenix aren’t your best choice.

Research Thoroughly

For me, this involves making sure there aren’t any travel advisories. I then check the average weather for the time I’m going. If those all fall into a vacation I want, I then research more in-depth about local customs. I personally like reading blogs, watching YouTube videos, or even scrolling through Pinterest. I suggest reading or watching from different sources so you can get a well-rounded view of what to expect.

Pack Smart

My best summer packing tip is to always bring a sweatshirt or a warm layer. I also go the added measure and bring pants. I have made the mistake too many times when only bring summer clothes and learning temptures can drop even in the summer. Plus, I always wear them on the plane so it doesn’t take up space in my carry-on and because airport and planes are always freezing! If possibly, I would suggest only bringing a carry-on. I personally think that in the summer with all the busy travelers, luggage gets lost way more often. Not sure this is a true static but more travelers means more luggage for employees to handle. If you are traveling around Europe via plane this summer, make sure you check their carry-on luggage policy. A lot of budget airlines have a weight limit for carry-on’s. Travel Insurance

Now this is something I don’t use often but I know I should. Honestly, I’m probably going to start this summer because I’m learning more about the importance of it. Having travel insurance can cover the costs of your trip due to  unexpected events like illness, injury, or trip cancellations. Travel insurance offers a variety of coverages to safeguard your trip, including trip cancellation and interruption insurance, which reimburses you for pre-paid, non-refundable expenses if your trip is canceled or cut short for covered reasons. Additionally, it can provide medical expense coverage for emergencies abroad, baggage loss or delay insurance to protect your personal items, and emergency evacuation coverage, ensuring you can be transported safely in case of a medical or natural disaster emergency. I suggest shopping around for the best policy.

Be Flexible With Your Plans

Travel insurance brings me to my last tip, being flexible with you plans. While planning is crucial, so is flexibility. There is so much benefit of having a flexible itinerary that allows for spontaneous adventures, changes in weather, or unexpected closures. Don’t over stress because life happens, and you won’t be able to keep everything according to plan!

Safety and Health

When embarking on your summer vacations, prioritizing your safety and health is crucial for a hassle-free experience. The excitement of exploring new destinations should always be paired with precautionary measures. Stay informed about the health and safety advisories of your travel destinations, especially concerning the current health situation. Vaccinations might be necessary for certain regions, most states have travel vaccine places where you can seek travel advice or receive the vaccines. I like to bring a stocked health kit that contains the essentials as well as basics I might need like Advil. For me, sun protection are non-negotiable, particularly in hotter climates, to prevent heatstroke and sunburn. Just remember, your health and safety are the foundation of a memorable summer vacation, ensuring you enjoy every moment worry-free.

Use Technology and Apps

In the digital age, technology plays a pivotal role in enhancing and streamlining our travel experiences, especially for summer vacations. A plethora of apps are at your disposal to aid in every aspect of your journey—from planning to execution. Navigation apps like Google Maps and Citymapper become indispensable for finding your way around unfamiliar locales, while travel planning apps such as  Language barriers can be effortlessly broken down with apps like Duolingo for learning basics before you go, and Google Translate for on-the-fly assistance. Lastly, don’t forget about the weather apps; knowing what to expect climate-wise is crucial for packing and planning outdoor activities.
